The Origin of Spankings, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Belt

Recently, I was reading an article (here) over at Aunty Andrea's wonderful Spank Shop, posted by one of her male readers, who related how his boyhood desires to be spanked unfolded, and it started me pondering a question of cosmological significance (at least to my cosmos):
So where does this 'spanking thing' come from anyway? Just how is it that some people (more than most suspect, according to some surveys) become attracted to the idea of discipline and punishment as a component of our libido? The question has always intrigued me. Is there a cultural factor involved? The 'English Vice', as it's been called, may not be unique to the Brits, but it is certainly more prevalent in western societies than in the rest of the world. My global visitors map shows they come from every western, industrialized, Christianized nation, and virtually none from outside that sphere). This fact alone opens up a whole truckload of questions: Has the guilt-based religious system instilled some inner need to be cleansed through suffering? Or perhaps our ego-driven, super-competitive, overly stressful lifestyle inspires a backlash, either to let go of the burdens of responsibility and let someone else be our decision maker, or in the case of tops, to regain a sense of control in a society where we have so little?
On the other hand, perhaps it is not culture-based at all. Some of us would claim to be 'born Spankos', with the 'kink' already hardwired into our brains, or programmed into our genetic makeup. Others don't discover their predeliction for punitive play until adulthood, most often through a partner who is either already a Spanko or just through experimental foreplay. I suspect, though, that the majority of us became aware of this side of ourselves during childhood, often from being spanked.
I am not qualified to spout universal declarations on any of these questions - I can only speak to my own experience.

Unlike some Spankos who were punished frequently as kids, spanking was not a common practice in my household. A means of last resort, yes, but relatively rare. I was a quiet, well-behaved child, who almost never did anything that warranted physical punishment.  Nor did I have any desire to be punished by my parents. I respected them, and would have been mortified to drive them to the point of spanking me. But there were plenty of women on tv and in the movies who inspired thoughts of spanking. TV moms and teachers were a legitimate target of desire.
When you're a kid, the most revealing view of women you have commonly available is of legs. Summer fashions revealed their delights in droves - smooth, round thighs, sunlight glimmering off  knee and gently curving shin. It was - and still is! - maddening. And spanking offered a means of getting up close and personal with what I considered the most exciting aspect to women. The idea of dangling across a pair of lovely legs was mesmerizing (still is,too).
Add to that fact that the vast majority of my teachers were women - so I came to associate women with figures of authority, and disciplining in class was not the legal and social taboo it is today. Watching a female teacher scold or spank a student was a spectacle that held not only myself, but every kid in class spellbound. Afterward, in the yard, the other children would crowd around the one who'd been punished and pommel him/her with questions - how much did it hurt? Does it still sting? Were you afraid? Did you want to cry? Let's see if she left any marks! I suppose the kid in question was something of a hero to the rest of us. It should have been clear to me then that they all shared my fascination for punishment on some level. But it wasn't clear to me that there were formative sexual underpinnings being forged in us all. Probably in most of my classmates, such incidents are overwhelmed by later, non-spanking experiences - but, with some of us, their power still resonates.
That's enough rambling for one day. The second half of this post topic will deal with a more specific experience that probably did more to shape my Spanko-ness than any other.

NEXT: The Babysitter Incident.

  1. Good post, and I agree with what you've said, I was never spanked as a child. But I remember seeing women in heels and stockings, which was the dress code of that era.

The fact that I was threatened by some of them (teachers especially) with a good sound spanking over their knee fueled the spanking desire in me. I too asked myself would it really hurt, would there be marks, how would I feel afterwards.

But as I said I was never spanked, that is until I turned 18 and was old enough to seek out women that would be willing to teach me all about the taboo subject. LOL It is no longer taboo, to me at least.

    Thanks for the post.

  2. Where it all comes from is the big mystery, isn't it?

  3. Well I grew up on a farm in the 50's so spanking at home and at school was very common. At home I was mostly spanked by my Mother, on my bare bottom. Most of my teachers were women and I was on the receiving end of quite a few spankings, though never on the bare bottom. They usually used a wooden paddle OTK in grade school, but in Jr High and High School they had us bend over hands on our knees for several swats of the paddle. If we didn't stay in position we got extra swats. It was very embarrassing, because it was usually done in front of the class. I always loved to watch when someone else got spanked, it was usually a boy, but once in a while a girl would get spanked also. I was very intrigued when a woman teacher spanked some macho boy, and showed total authority over him, to me that was a beautiful thing. Been a spanko ever since.

  4. I think that Christianity has turned "some" of us into spankos because Scripture suggests that "whom the Lord loves, He chastens."

    Just my take,

  5. When I was young back in the 60s I was never physically punished by my parents but there were a lot of threats from teachers and other authority figures. The one I remember best came whilst I was in hospital behaving badly. The staff nurse, wearing the old fashioned uniform, threatened to spank me in front of the rest of the children in the ward if my behaviour didn't improve. Because I stopped misbehaving immediately I never found out if she would have done it. I'm not sure if this event triggered my lifelong fascination with spanking but I've always remembered it and also still get excited by a stern woman in uniform.

  6. Great post. The title alone almost had me dig out my cowboy hat.

By the time I was in school during the 80's, spanking was all but gone in Canada. I remember one kid getting the strap from the male principal in grade one; I guess that was when I was about five in 1983/4. The next year we got a female principal but I think the strap was retired. In grade 2 I made some terrible math mistakes and disappointed with me, as I left Ms. Straiman's desk, she gave me a solid whack on the seat of my pants. I hated it then but it was not too long before I secretly wished it had been more.

Grade three brought something new. My teacher, Ms. Stoneman, was very angry with me for talking during class. I had never gotten in trouble like that before. She sent me to the cloakroom and I remember nervously waiting and kinda hoping to see if she would put me across her lap in her blue short sleeve dress and stockings. Soon enough I remembered the strap and principal and wondered of I would be brought to her office.

I never did get a spanking at school but part of me truly wished I did. After those events my mind went past spanking to humiliation as well; being watched, made an example of and so on, up to being diapered by the principal after she was done spanking me,

    1. Unlike you, I did get spanked in school. Mrs. Bateman, my third grade teacher, strode up to me, hauled me out of my desk and spanked me in front of the whole class. I had no idea what I had done to earn it, and all I remember was thinking 'wow, how come this doesn't hurt?' I could hardly feel a thing, and she was a reasonably hefty woman and was smacking hard enough to lift me up onto my toes.
I'd heard rumors of the strap in the principal's office, but I never heard of it ever getting used, so I think it was a fabrication to keep the kids in line.

  7. I also do some frequent - often daily - spanking of my guy for various offenses. We tape them and offer them up on clips4sale. Not so much for the money, because the reaility is they're so cheap and such a surprisingly small market, that they only cover enough for new toys and dinner out once in awhile. But my guy believes that there is SO little F/m spanking clips out in the world - of a more "maternal" and very real nature, that he truly wants to share his "good fortune" - but not at the expense of SOME built in privacy. If we just posted them out everywhere for all the world to see for free, they could end up in the wrong hands and get posted on YouTube, or something, and he is ultra paranoid about being "outed". People tend not to give stuff away they paid for, even if its just 4 or 5 dollars.

Anyway, I think the readers HERE would love to see our clips. Even just to know this can be more than fantasy. Costs you nothing to look. ;)

  9. Sorry, can't help there. I don't use Yahoo News, but I'm a little surprised this blog would show up there... can you send a link?

  10. As you suspect, spankos are created through early childhood experiences, probably too early for most of us to remember clearly. The experience could be an actual spanking or perhaps, as some have recounted here, simply the possibility of being spanked is enough. Witnessing another child being spanked certainly accounts for some of us. I've worked out a comprehensive theory to explain what happens that I will publish eventually.

The commonly held belief that there is some sort of "spanko gene" does not hold up under rigorous analysis. It's too long to get into here, but there would either have to be a mutation rate far higher than has been observed so far, or else you have to explain how this gene could be transmitted through the generations all the time the forces of natural selection were working against it (spanko behavior in general is going to drive away more prospective mates than it will attract).

Finally, while I'm interested in the geographic distribution of those who frequent spanking sites, you must bear in mind that a group of internet users is not a random sample of the earth's population. Western industrialized (and Christian) countries are bound to be overrepresented in any sample you take because these are the most advanced countries with more computers and internet access per capita than third world countries. About 75% of the populations of Pakistan and Afghanistan are illiterate, so right there you're not going to get too many internet users. Also, the internet is censored in many if not all non-Western nations, and the authorities may very well block porn and spanking sites. Therefore, there could well be more spankos in those parts of the world than we realize.

    1. A very thorough and scientific analysis. Of course, you're right - there is no 'spanko gene'; I was speaking loosely. Some people just feel they have it hardwired into them.
As for the geographical distribution, I suspect there is also a language factor at play - English may be the most commonly spoken tongue on the planet, but the stats are still bound to show a bias against countries where it is not the official language. I've tried to mitigate that somewhat by making the blog predominantly visual; despite the last two posts, I don't generally write much. I think that has tended to help in countries like Russia and the Ukraine, which do show up on my visitors map.

  11. My site is entirely visual, and yet I've never had a visitor from India or Sri Lanka or Pakistan. But then, it would be the death penalty for putting up a site like mine in Pakistan, wouldn't it? I think so. So we don't know, do we? I'll bet neither of our sites come up anywhere in the world except Western nations. I suspect that the only governments that do not strictly ban erotica are nations that are not legally allowed to ban erotica by their own constitutions and bills of rights. Like, you can't view this site in North Korea...right? God knows how it would threaten Communism, but you can bet your ass that you can't see RedRump in NK. How about Syria? Doubt it. Yemen? Gabon? The Maldives? Botswana? Iran? Perhaps Western people are the only people in the world who believe in freedom of speech.
